Anecdote* William Backhouse was born on 12 January 1815 in Swillington, Yorkshire, England.
Swillington in the early nineteenth century, was a village parish just six miles east southeast of Leeds in Yorkshire West Riding. In 1841 Swillington had a population of 662, and the main occupations were farming and coal mining. By 1990 Swillington was a middle class suburb of Leeds with a population of 2500. The Swillington and Colton Commons, along with the reclaimed colliery spoil heaps, provides a green-belt that separates it from Leeds. To the south and east of Swillington there is still a semicircle of coal mines.
When William turned nine, his father died. After the traditional year of mourning, his mother, Jane, married William Silversides and they leased the farm from the Backhouse heirs. We presume that William grew to manhood here, but he never again appeared in any Swillington records. His next appearance in official records was the birth of his sixth son, Thomas in 1848 in Market Weighton, Yorkshire, a village about 35 miles east of Swillington.
William appeared alone in the census of 1851 as a lodger at Green Cliff Village, St Martens, Jersey, Channel Islands. He was listed as a 36 year old labourer, working for the government. At this time the British government was building coastal fortifications to defend the Channel Islands from a possible French invasion and many workers were brought over from England. Hannah and the children were probably still in England, but followed within the year. William and Hannah Backhouse appeared with their children Joseph, George, John, Thomas, Benjamin, Mary Jane (listed as Mary Ann), Charlotte, and Edward Backhouse, on the census of 9 April 1861 at Butes Hill, St Anne's, Alderney, Channel Islands, where William was working as a sawyer.
In 1869 William, Hannah, their unmarried sons, George, Thomas, Benjamin, and their younger children Mary Jane, Charlotte, and Edward immigrated to America and to the Wyoming valley of Pennsylvania. William and Hannah's son, son John had come with his wife Elizabeth in 1868; and Joseph and his wife came about the same time. The coal mining companies were recruiting Welsh and English miners and bringing them to the coal fields and this may have brought the Backhouse/Yorks here, as all but father William worked as miners.
For some reason, the Backhouse changed their surname to York in the United States. One possibly reason is that, in the post civil war period in America, "back house" was a synonym for the outhouse, and had smutty connotations. Another possibility, is a family story that one of the brothers (probably John) jumped ship in America, which was a crime; and so changed his name to York to mislead authorities - the rest of the family following suit. We shall probably never know.
The newly minted William York with his wife, Anna, were enumerated with their children, George, Thomas, Benjamin, Mary Jane, Charlotte, and Edward on the census of 8 July 1870 at Nanticoke, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania where he was listed as working as a diver. He was a 65 year old widowed carpenter, when he appeared on the census of 28 June 1880 at Newport Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, with his son, Edward, his daughter, (Mary) Jane, her husband, Ebenezer Hunter, and their daughter, Annie F (Hannah Florence). There is no later recorded information on William, he may have died in Pennsylvania, or went with a son to Colorado or Montana.4

Anecdote* Thomas was not listed with his wife and children in the 1880 Pennsylvania census, and may have already traveled to Butte, Montana, the first of the Yorks to do so.
Butte started as a typical gold camp of the 1860's. By the late 70's gold was getting to hard to remove from the mixed ores of Butte hill, and the mining was declining. By 1878 it was realized that the mixed ore had a high silver content, which, although hard to extract, was well worth the processing. The major waste in the slag was copper and by 1882 it was also being extracted. Copper turned out to be the major economic metal, and after a local stamp mill, smelter, and refinery was started, all the old slag heaps were processed for the copper.
In 1880 the population of the Butte area was only 3363, but by 1884 it had grown to 23,744 with over 300 working mines.
Thomas's family was part of that growth. They probably came to Butte in late 1880 or 1881 right after a railroad was built from Colorado, connecting Butte to the nation.
By 1881 the Thomas York family was in Montana and soon owned a house in Burlington. Burlington was a small mining town on the west side of the Butte hill centered around the Bluebird silver mine and stamping mill.. After June, 1893, when the price of silver dropped the Bluebird closed down.
Thomas then worked at the Gagnon Mine in Butte and soon was the Mine Foreman. The Mine Foreman at that time was equivalent to a General Superintendent, hiring, firing and supervising all underground workers. This was an incalculable help to his brothers, sons, and nephews, and soon much of the family was in the Butte mining area.
From 26 February 1881 until his death, Thomas was associated with Butte Lodge #22, Ancient, Free and Accepted, Masons of Montana, and was buried in the Masonic Section of the cemetery with his headstone indicating he was a 32 degree Mason.20

(Mentioned) oObit10 August 1902 Lottie Jane York was mentioned in the obituary of Elizabeth Dyke on 10 August 1902 at Anaconda, Deer Lodge County, Montana;
     DRAGGED TO HER DEATH
     Mrs. Elizabeth York, of one of the best known families ill the Big Hole country, met with a violent death about 11 o'clock Friday morning at the Chalk bluffs on the Big Hole River. With her left foot caught in the wheel of the buggy she was dragged to her death by a spirited horse. Her dead body was discovered about an hour later by Fred Porter, a neighbor. He drove four miles with the body to the York Ranch near Bowen and notified a son, Harry York, of what had taken place. Harry York drove 12 miles to the Belin ranch, where his brother, William York was at work. The latter sent word to Undertaker Richards in Butte. The body was brought to Butte last night and Coroner Johnson notified. He made an investigation with the result that he decided an inquest was unnecessary. The funeral will probably take place on Tuesday. The arrangements are not yet complete.
     Mrs. York was 56 years of age and the widow of John York who died in Coeur d'Alenes about eight years ago. She was born on the Island of Jersey, in the English Channel, and was married there. With her husband she came to the United States 33 years ago and in 1889 came to Montana. John York was a stock and hay rancher and made his home in the Big Hole country, where his thrift made him wealthy. After his death the widow and children carried on the business and acquired other ranches. Mrs. York leaves six sons and five daughters. The sons are William, Hary, John, Eben, Charles and George York. The daughters are Alice, Cora and Bessie York, Mrs. J. C. Golightly of Golden, Col. and Mrs. A. J. Porter of Newcastle, Col. The last two named are expected to arrive in Butte on Tuesday morning to attend the funeral.
     Mrs. York left her ranch near Bowen about 10 o'clock Friday morning to drive to the Belin ranch, which had been recently leased by herself and sons. She was taking provisions and clean linen to the sons on the Belin ranch. About four miles from her ranch Mrs. York had reason to leave her buggy, presumably to tighten a part of the harness. It is supposed that as she was climbing back into the buggy, the spirited horse started suddenly causing her foot to slip from the front axle into the wheel. As the foot caught Mrs. York fell backward between the front and rear right wheels. The horse continued and the woman was dragged by the foot, her head bumping violently on the ground until the horse tired and stopped. The position of the body when found would indicate that life was extinct when the horse stopped.
     Fred Porter conducts a ranch near that of the Yorks. He started out about 11 o'clock to visit a neighboring ranch, and came upon the lifeless body of Mrs. York about noon. The foot of the woman was still caught in the wheel. The foot and limb were torn, but no bones were broken. The head of the woman was a mass of cuts and bruises. The forehead was scraped and bruised but there were no marks on the face. Porter drove the body to the York ranch where Harry York was at work. He then notified his brothers and sisters at the Belin ranch. All were heartbroken by the news."12

(Mentioned) oObit10 August 1902 William York was mentioned in the obituary of Elizabeth Dyke on 10 August 1902 at Anaconda, Deer Lodge County, Montana;
All were heartbroken by the news."14

(Mentioned) oObit10 August 1902 John York , Jr. was mentioned in the obituary of Elizabeth Dyke on 10 August 1902 at Anaconda, Deer Lodge County, Montana;
All were heartbroken by the news."10
