Navy*between 29 June 1958 and 30 August 1977  Between 29 June 1958 and 30 August 1977, while in the navy, John was stationed, While he was in high school John decided that he wanted a career in the United States Navy in the medical field, so right after his seventeenth birth, while a junior in high school, he enlisted in the Naval Reserve. A week after graduating from Butte High School, he went on active duty in June 1958 as an Apprentice Hospitalman.
He received basic medical training in San Diego and was stationed with a SeaBee Battalion that served in Okinawa, Alaska, and Midway Island. In 1962 he was sent to Boise, Idaho, to serve on the staff of the Marine Corps Reserve Training center. Here he married and had a son.
In 1964 he returned to the SeaBees, again on Okinawa. As soon as the Vietnam war started, his battalion was sent to work outside DaNang. During his service in Vietnam, he came under fire, but never saw, not shot at the enemy.
After rotation back from the war, John requested, and was assigned to Nuclear Submarine Training. After schooling in Groton, Connecticut, he served on the USS Corporal, a diesel sub, and then the USS Patrick Henry, a Polaris Ballistic Missile Submarine.
In 1969, John returned to the Basic Hospital Corps School in San Diego, this time as an instructor training new medical corpsmen. In September of that year he was appointed a Chief Hospital Corpsman. After serving at the school, John returned to submarines. This time to an attack sub, the USS Pintado. After a year, medical problems caused the navy to restrict John from the arduous and isolated submarine service, and he was transferred to the submarine tender, the USS Dixon where he served as the Medical Admin Chief, and then as the Medical Supply Chief.
In 1973 John was transferred to the aircraft carrier, USS Constellation, where he again was the Medical Supply Chief.
In 1974, John was assigned to shore duty as the Assistant Administrator of the Medical Department for the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. Here he retired from the Navy on 31 August 1977..5

Parham Hacker's horse rolled on Erick Maybee. He was thirty-five years old, and the weight of the upside down horse forced the pommel of the saddle into his liver. He was dying in one of Otis Crooker's cabins, with a systolic blood pressure of forty when I returned from Helena that night. I remember frantically hand cranking my grandfather's old centrifuge to seperate blood cells to cross-match and transfuse. We got him as far as the rickety old elevator in Bozeman Deaconess Hospital where he died on the way to the operating room."19,20

oObit  He ended his life as he as he lived - he always wanted to go with his boots on. He had been breaking horses at the Peter Hecker Ranch in Ennis. He was riding a horse he considered to be sufficient broke to be riden with a regular saddle. When he climbed on, the horse reared and fell over backwards on top of him. The saddle horn caused severe internal injuries and he died on a small plane rushing him to a hospital in Bozeman."10

JournalConclusion*  His second daughter, Belva Perry, wrote about Eric in her family history:
"My father, Herbert Eric Maybee, was born in Bowen, Montana on the 4 June 1909... His uncle Jack guarded the door to the confinement room while he was being delivered.... When he was about five he was traveling with his father, mother, little sister and grandmother, Mary Amanda on their way to Alaska. At that time his father died leaving his grieving wife and family. Bessie used her money and also her resources to get her family and Billie's (several had come for the funeral) back to Montana, but rather than gratitude they felt they were more qualified to raise her children than this unsophisticated girl was; and so her children were taken from her. Stella and Grandmother Mary Amanda sought and won custody of the children. His mother, heartbroken, moved to California. The few clues we have about his growing up years are from letters Mary Amanda Rufus and Beulah wrote to Stella. In the letters, they call Stella ‘mother' and her husband, James Burdette ‘dad', but it is evident that Mary Amanda is raising them. Eric and Beulah lived in Wisdom with their grandmother until 1925. In 1925 they moved to Salmon, Idaho. After Mary Amanda Rufus Cairns died, Eric, then sixteen was adopted by his Uncle Jack [John Wilbur Maybee] and he was supposed to live with him [in Wisdom], but they couldn't get along and so he [Eric] was batching with Eddie Turney and several others. They cut wood and sold it for $4 to $5 a cord. He met and fell in love with Rita Millecam. She returned to finish school in Salt Lake and they were married when she was twenty. They lived in Wisdom. They were in Idaho before Barbara was born, because there were no doctors in Wisdom. They stayed in Idaho Falls and Eric and many others worked for a company that was to pay at the end of the job. When the job ended, there was no pay -- all they got out of it was board and room. They stayed in Idaho Falls for four months then went back to Wisdom.
The depression was at its worst and jobs were hard to come by. Eric worked at anything he could find, usually associated with ranching or the outdoors. He worked for the United States Forest Service as a ranger and a fire watcher and as a hired hand on ranches. Perhaps the most unusual job he had was a bit part in a western movie filmed in the Big Hole area. He talked about going to school to become a ranger, but the family had to eat and there was never any money left over for school. In the earlier years, when the family lived on ranches, he taught Barbara and Belva how to ride horses. After a friend's young daughter, who was an excellent rider, died when her horse stepped in a hole, Eric decided that he wasn't going to teach any more of his children how to ride and would not let them ride very far alone. Some of the family horses (or those the children were allowed to ride) were very gentle and most were good-natured, but there was one named Ginger who loved to bite. Ranch life was very different and ranchers are a special breed -- tough, kind, generous to a fault. They and their wives are a hard working group. The wives would have to cook for huge crews during the summers, and those meals were not small. A typical breakfast consisted of ham or bacon, sausage, eggs, potatoes, fruit, pancakes and coffee. The wives and daughters got up at 4 a.m. or before to begin peeling potatoes and mixing batter. Dinner, the big meal of the day was several kinds of meat, potatoes, vegetables, several varieties of cakes or desserts and, of course, coffee. Even 'light' meals were heavier than anything a city dweller might eat, and they needed every bit of the energy to do the hard, physical work they did. Daughters of all ages helped cook the meals, then often as not joined mom, dad and the men working on the ranch. Some of the women were more weather beaten and tougher than the men.
At the various ranches the cowhands lived in a bunkhouse. They were a bunch of rowdy, fun-loving, but kind men who alternately spoiled and teased the children. Saturday night they would go to a local tavern or dance and 'whoop it up' until early in the morning and yet a lot of them made it to the church of their choice in the morning. Often in the evenings, the older fellows would tell stories, sometimes about their past experiences (highly exaggerated) or old standards. One favorite was The Cremation of Sam McGee. Another man might bring out a harmonica or guitar and everyone would sing.
When the family moved to Butte, Eric worked in the mines, but he hated being underground and finally left the family in Butte to work at various ranches and ranger stations. Everywhere he worked he made many friends. Often he brought some of the children over several weeks during the summer. Barbara was able to visit a lookout station one time and Barbara and Belva (as teenagers) visited him in Manhattan and Phillipsburg. The separation and difference in his and Rita's life styles finally led to a divorce.
Eric ended his life as he lived and as he always wanted to go "with his boots on". He had been breaking horses in Ennis Montana. He was living at that time in Bozeman. He was riding a horse that he had been working with and that he considered to be sufficiently "broke" to be ridden with a regular saddle. When he climbed on, the horse reared and fell over backward on top of him. The saddle horn caused severe internal injuries and he died in a small plane rushing him to a hospital in Bozeman.
I remember several things about the funeral. It was the return of his boots and saddle that really caused Edna to break down. This was the second husband she had lost at a relatively young age, both by accidents. We learned of his death only by a newspaper clipping and my family and I attended. His mother had not been heard from for years and were excited when a telegram came saying that his mother was coming, but it was Stella who arrived. The funeral was different than most I have attended but the singing of "Home on the Range" did not seem at all out of place. Very appropriately, the cemetery where Eric is buried has the statue of horseman at the entrance. According to some standards he may not have been a great achiever, but he was greatly loved by many people who mourned his passing, especially many youth, because he took the time to be a friend and to give them a boost on their way. He had a charisma born of love for his fellow man of which his children can always be proud."10

     DRAGGED TO HER DEATH
Mrs. Elizabeth York, of one of the best known families ill the Big Hole country, met with a violent death about 11 o'clock Friday morning at the Chalk bluffs on the Big Hole River. With her left foot caught in the wheel of the buggy she was dragged to her death by a spirited horse. Her dead body was discovered about an hour later by Fred Porter, a neighbor. He drove four miles with the body to the York Ranch near Bowen and notified a son, Harry York, of what had taken place. Harry York drove 12 miles to the Belin ranch, where his brother, William York was at work. The latter sent word to Undertaker Richards in Butte. The body was brought to Butte last night and Coroner Johnson notified. He made an investigation with the result that he decided an inquest was unnecessary. The funeral will probably take place on Tuesday. The arrangements are not yet complete.
Mrs. York was 56 years of age and the widow of John York who died in Coeur d'Alenes about eight years ago. She was born on the Island of Jersey, in the English Channel, and was married there. With her husband she came to the United States 33 years ago and in 1889 came to Montana. John York was a stock and hay rancher and made his home in the Big Hole country, where his thrift made him wealthy. After his death the widow and children carried on the business and acquired other ranches. Mrs. York leaves six sons and five daughters. The sons are William, Hary, John, Eben, Charles and George York. The daughters are Alice, Cora and Bessie York, Mrs. J. C. Golightly of Golden, Col. and Mrs. A. J. Porter of Newcastle, Col. The last two named are expected to arrive in Butte on Tuesday morning to attend the funeral.
Mrs. York left her ranch near Bowen about 10 o'clock Friday morning to drive to the Belin ranch, which had been recently leased by herself and sons. She was taking provisions and clean linen to the sons on the Belin ranch. About four miles from her ranch Mrs. York had reason to leave her buggy, presumably to tighten a part of the harness. It is supposed that as she was climbing back into the buggy, the spirited horse started suddenly causing her foot to slip from the front axle into the wheel. As the foot caught Mrs. York fell backward between the front and rear right wheels. The horse continued and the woman was dragged by the foot, her head bumping violently on the ground until the horse tired and stopped. The position of the body when found would indicate that life was extinct when the horse stopped.
Fred Porter conducts a ranch near that of the Yorks. He started out about 11 o'clock to visit a neighboring ranch, and came upon the lifeless body of Mrs. York about noon. The foot of the woman was still caught in the wheel. The foot and limb were torn, but no bones were broken. The head of the woman was a mass of cuts and bruises. The forehead was scraped and bruised but there were no marks on the face. Porter drove the body to the York ranch where Harry York was at work. He then notified his brothers and sisters at the Belin ranch. All were heartbroken by the news."13

JournalConclusion*  Bessie York was born on 5 June 1890 at 620 N Montana Street in Butte, Montana. There was no given name entered on her birth certificate, but her official name was presumably Elizabeth Dyke York; however, since her mother was called Elizabeth, she was always called Bessie by her families.
Bessie was only two years old when her father died, her formal schooling ended in grade three, and in 1902, when her mother's death left her an orphan at twelve, she and the other youngest children, George, Alice, and Cora, were sent to Golden, Colorado, to live with their older married sisters, Charlotte and Minetta. The girls returned to Montana shortly before 1905 In 1907 Bessie first met Billie Maybee. She was a cook and he a foreman on a large horse and cattle ranch owned by Dr Hermann Mussigbrod and his uncle Peter Mussigbrod. The Mussigbrod ranch near Bowen, Montana, was next to those owned by Billie's brother and Bessie's brother-in-law. When she was 18, Bessie married Billie at the home of her brother-in-law and sister, Claude and Alice Schroeder. In 1912 the Maybee family moved to Mount Vernon, Skagit County, Washington and bought ten acres. They lived near Billie's uncle William Maybee, his son Fred, a girl Eva and a baby named Nellie Maybee.
On May 14, 1914 Billie and Bessie sold their home in Mt Vernon to Chris J. Aaberg preparing for their great adventure. The next day the family, including Billie's mother, started for Alaska by covered wagon with two teams of horses and a herd of semi-broken horses for sale in the Alaskan gold fields. Bessie wrote the following to her grandchildren some forty years later.
"We were on the Jackrabbit trail from Ashcroft (Canada), and we came to the first house, a Ranger's cabin. It had food in cans and a spring where cold clear waters ran - pure and so good. So we decided to rest the horses, ourselves, etc. That night Billie was so cheerful, and the children, your daddy Eric and his little sister were so pleased to see their daddy was so much better, and he held both in his arms and said his prayers every night with them; but this night we asked God to bless and keep us safe.... So in the evening of June 4th 1914 I awoke, stirred the fire, and gave Billie his medicine, made him a hot cup of cocoa, and told him I would sing him a song. It was the lullaby I sang each night to little Eric and Ethel.
Billie said to me, 'Honey, I don't know what I would do without you. I'm terribly sorry we sold our place to come here in the wilderness. I've enjoyed it after being cooped up in the house so much'.... He put his arms around me and kissed me and said, 'Well, Bessie, we will always be together and no one can ever take me away.'
‘Oh,' I said, 'you and me will be sweethearts forever in our new home. It won't be too far from here.' So I tucked him in and kissed him and said, 'Now I will tuck your favorite horse, Irish, in and see how the rest of the horses are.' I went and when I came back he seemed to be asleep. But, it seems death lurked there. I arose and walked to the big Morris chair we had for his bed, and when I looked, I saw he was gone."
Bessie, celebrated her twenty fourth birthday as a new widow. She and Billie's mother Mary, cleaned and dressed Billie for burial and carried him back to Ashcroft, British Columbia for burial.
Winter had come hard when, on November 27, Bessie and her party wintered the horses in a logging camp at Cheschewwella (abt 52 miles from Spokane, Washington) and wired Billie's oldest brother to come to Spokane to help. Meanwhile Bessie cooked at the Davenport Hotel in Spokane to support the family. They returned to the Big Hole Valley the next spring. The next year Bessie bought a three room log house in Wisdom with Billie's pension money and money they had saved (later her son Eric and his wife Rita lived there). In 1916 Bessie moved away from the family due to "pressures and prejudices" between her, Billie's mother, Mary Cairns and Billie's sister, Stella. Mary Cairns gained legal custody of her grandchildren.
Bessie and her new husband, Maurice Cruz lived near Hamilton in Ravalli County, Montata from 1917 until 1925, when the family moved to California. On their way they went through Salmon, Idaho and saw Bessie's son Eric, now 14. In March 1951 Bessie was a patient at Camarillo State Hospital, a mental institution in California. She wrote her sister Alice to help her get out, but by the time Alice had responded, Bessie had been discharged. In 1958 Bessie was living with (and possibly married to) a Mr Arabus. He had cancer the next year, and has been heard of no more, but Bessie continued to use the name Bessie York Arabus and Elizabeth Arabus.. During the 1960's Bessie lived at 170 'O' Nectarine Avenue, Goleta, Santa Barbara County, California. In these later years she went by the name of Betty.34
Death*13 September 1969 Bessie York died on 13 September 1969 at Casa Descanso, 1020 Cliff Drive, Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara County, California, at age 79; Cerebral Thrombosis, due to Generalized Arteriosclerosis.32

He also enjoyed a job he had when he was small, delivering bread and cakes, etc. to customers because he got his pay mostly in good things to eat. Then he had some good swimming holes. He remembered how he told little Janie not to tell mother, so she said, "Mother, they boys did not go swimming." He also remembers helping dad to save little Art's life. Art had fallen into the well feet first. With no ladder or rope, Dad took little Julius by the feet, put him so he could grab Art. Art had thick, curly hair, so they got hold of it and had him safe on dry land in no time at all. He remembered how his dad would not let him get away with it when it came to breaking rules. Once he played hooky and didn't get home until 6 p.m. When he got home, there sat Dad, "Where you been?" "School". "Bring me that stick". Few words, much action, that was his father. Anecdote*1919 From: ‘History of Utah' - volume by Peter M. [apparently written about 1919]

"Julius A. Millecam is a prosperous merchant of Brinton ward, conducting a well appointed general store. He is a native of Utrecht, Holland, born October 1887 and is a son of David and Adriana (Baardwyk) Millecam. His forefathers were French barons of the seventeenth century and lived during the times when titles were bought and sold, one of the name disposing of his title for two thousand francs. Daniel Millecam, the father of Julius A. Millecam, was a blacksmith by trade and during the latter's early boyhood he removed with his family to Pretoria, in the Transvaal of South Africa. He was a blacksmith there in the government service for five years, after which be returned to Holland and in 1907 he came to America. He then followed his trade in the railroad shops at Salt Lake City and also the mining camps at Bingham. Early in the war he enlisted for service at the government shipyards at Seattle and there passed away in 1918.

Julius A. Millecam pursued his education in the graded schools of Holland and has made his own way in the world from the age of 13 years. He was a cabin boy on Holland vessels on the North Sea and also worked in machine shops. He afterwards learned the blacksmith's trade, serving an apprenticeship to that trade. After coming to Utah, he first herded sheep and also worked in the flour mills. Subsequently, he established a blacksmith shop at Brinton, which he conducted for a few years prior to opening his mercantile business. He established his store in an old business place that had been closed for twenty years There he put on exhibit an attractive line of goods and as the years passed he developed his trade until his sales now amount to $4,000 a month. He has a most attractive store and his business methods measure up to the highest commercial ethics and standard. He is actuated in all that he does by a most progressive spirit and labors have brought splendid returns.

On the 29th of June, 1910, Mr. Millecam was united in marriage to Miss Harriet McFarlane, a daughter of James McFarlane, a pioneer of Utah, who crossed the plains with ox teams as captain of a company of emigrants nearly every year until of the railroad was built. He afterward worked the railroad. To Mr. and Mrs. Millecam has been born one daughter, Rita, who is now 8 years of age.

Mr. Millecam is an Elder in the L.D.S. Church. His political support is given to the Democratic Party and he has been a delegate to state and County Conventions."23
Business*between 1920 and 1921  Between 1920 and 1921 at 4800 Highland Drive, Holladay, Salt Lake County, Utah, Julius Anton Millecam and Harriet Ellen McFarlane started a business. The paper reported "In 1921 J. A. Anecdote* John Backhouse York, born in Yorkshire, married Elizabeth Dyke on 2 August 1866 at Alderney in the Channel Islands.
His family described him as 6' 2" or 6' 7" tall. According to oral family history he was a foot taller than his wife. Her death certificate says she was 5' 4" tall. John was a mariner, possibly a whaler.
He and Elizabeth immigrated to America in 1868 with their infant daughter. Family tradition tells the story that John was a captain of a whaler on its way to Australia, when it foundered off the coast of New England, and Minnetta was born in the lifeboat. A closer version might be the story Elizabeth Dyke said happened to a sister, but probably is about her and John which said:
"My sister's husband was a sailor on the ship that carried his wife and baby and he jumped ship when they reached New York. They changed their name and moved west."
John and Elizabeth were in Albany, New York, going by the name York, when their daughter Minnetta was born in 1869.
John, with his brothers, was a coal miner in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania in the early 1870s
John and his brother George are the only sons that we know who brought their families to the Colorado mining fields. There were coal fields in Colorado, but it appears that both brothers were mining silver.
In any case, John, Elizabeth, and family were living on Water Street in Golden, Colorado, during the 1880s . Their daughter Alice had early memories of Victorian opulence, living in a large home with a maid, adults dressing for dinner, and treats in the nursery. John filed for naturalization on 22 June 1880 in Jefferson County, Colorado but no record of completion has been found.
In 1890 the family had moved to the copper mining area around Butte, Montana, where John had various jobs in the mines.
John was only 47 when he died leaving Elizabeth with ten children from age two to twenty-one. A grieving mother told the family that he was murdered while carrying a mine payroll to Coeur D'Alene, Idaho, rather than revealing that he cut his own throat. (Depression was genetically transmitted in the York family and at least six suicides were recorded).
Within two months of John's death Elizabeth and her ten children homesteaded a ranch in Bowen Township (later Fishtrap), in Beaverhead County, Montana. (Fishtrap is in the Big Hole Valley, which is a 7,500-foot high prairie crenelated on all sides by high, white mountains). The family built a three room log house by October 1892 and then a barn, a stable, and corrals. In 1902 the ranch was valued at $500. The house was later expanded to two stories.
Beside ranching the homestead, Elizabeth had leased a farm in German Township outside Butte, that she and her children worked. In 1902 Elizabeth took a year lease on the Tucker stage stop on the James Tucker Ranch in Fishtrap and was busy with "lots of stoppers". In July Alice, Cora, and Bessie were helping her at the stage stop, but in August Alice and Bessie had returned to the ranch cooking for the boys bringing in the harvest.
On 8 August 1902, when she was 57, Elizabeth Dyke York died of a buggy accident caused by a runaway horse on the James Tucker Ranch in Fishtrap.23

This being all the information obtainable and there being no possibility whatever of any foul play being connected with said death."25,26

Anecdote10 August 1902 A garbled account from the Butte Miner, Sunday, 10 Aug 1902 'Mrs John York, a sister in law to Mrs George York, the latter residing at 45 West Boardman street, in this city, was thrown from a buggy in which she was riding near her home at Divide a few days ago, and from her from her injuries which she then received she died yesterday morning. The horse, which was considered a safe animal, took fright while Mrs. York was driving it. and in shying threw her from the buggy. Mrs York was formerly a resident of Butte and her body was yesterday brought to Butte for burial. Interment will take place this afternoon at Mount Moriah cemetery.'
from the Obituary Column 'Mrs Elizabeth York, age 56, died last Friday near Divide. Richards Funeral Parlor till Tuesday. Removed to residence of Mrs George York, 45 W. Boardman where funeral was held.27
oObit10 August 1902  On 10 August 1902 at Anaconda, Deer Lodge County, Montana.
All were heartbroken by the news."28
Burial*12 August 1902 She was buried on 12 August 1902 at Mount Moriah Cemetery, Butte, Silver Bow County, Montana.25,29,30
Anecdote15 August 1902 From the Big Hole Breezes, August 15, 1902:
Last Friday morning, some time between 11 and 12 o'clock, Mrs. Elizabeth York was dragged to her death in a runaway. She left the Tucker ranch, at which place she and her family had made their home for several months, about 10 o'clock, driving alone, and was found by one of H. J. Toomey's men shortly before 12 o'clock in an insensible condition with her foot locked in the front wheel while the horse was quietly grazing. When first seen by the man, the horse was moving slowly and then stopped. The reins had been tied to the dashboard of the buggy, and the position of her body between the wheels would indicate that she was either getting in or out of the buggy when the animal started.
The unfortunate woman was taken back to the Tucker ranch and her son Harry came to Wisdom for Dr Towers, who did not get there until after her death which occured about 4 o'clock in the afternoon. The doctor said she probably died of concussion of the brain.
The remains were taken to Butte for burial."31
On 8 August 1902, when she was 57, Elizabeth Dyke York died of a buggy accident caused by a runaway horse on the James Tucker Ranch in Fishtrap.32

Anecdote I, James McFarlane, was born in Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland, 22 September 1847, son of Peter McFarlane, who was born in the city of Glasgow, Scotland, 28 August 1819--he being the son of James McFarlane and Agnes Bryson McFarlane. My mother was Mary Clark, daughter of John Clark and Jean McIntyre. Mother was born 20 May 1820 in Johnstone, Scotland.
My father and mother were converted to the Gospel as taught by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in, or about the year 1840. I think it was in the town of Greenock, Renfrewshire, the town in which I was born.
We sailed from Liverpool, England on 6 May 1862. There were 376 Saints on board the sailing ship Manchester. We started west, arriving in Florence, Nebraska on 7 July 1862. (This is during the time of the Civil War 1861 - 1865)
During the time we were encamped at Florence waiting for other companies coming from the East, and teams from Utah, to take the Saints to Utah, a terrible thunder, lightning and rain storm hit the camp. There were two of the brethren killed, and Joseph W. Young was severely hurt while he was crossing a bridge. The lightning struck his carriage and, if I remember rightly, both the horses were killed. The storm broke on the camp with such fury that I marveled that any were left alive.
Father and Mother had seven sons and one daughter. Two sons and the daughter died at an early age while yet in Scotland. James, Peter, John, Arthur, and Archibald came with their parents. Archibald died as a small boy.
As I have before said, we were met at Florence, Nebraska by teamsters and covered wagons drawn by oxen, with provisions of food for the trip. Only the aged and little children could find places to ride, while all the men and young people had to walk all the way. Their shoes were worn out long before the journey was over. They had to wrap their feet in any kind of heavy cloth they could find. At night their feet would be sore and bleeding from the thistles, rocks, and hot sand they had to travel over in the long hours of the day.
Camp was made by the wagons forming a circle. After the evening meal the Saints would gather for prayers and they would sing the songs of Zion. "Come, Come Ye Saints" was a favorite
They had a great deal of trouble with the Indians. Often the teamsters would arise in the morning to find part of their cattle had been driven off by the Indians, although the guards were watching the animals all night. It required a great deal of judgment to get their cattle back without a fight. Sometimes it was hard to find water for the people and the cattle. We arrived in Salt Lake City, October 1 and made camp in the Tithing Yard where Hotel Utah now stands.
This was the place where all emigrant trains made their unloading stop. If the Saints had relatives, or friends, in Utah, they were met by them and taken to their homes until places and work could be arranged for them. Those who had no one to meet them were placed in the care of the Church Committee who helped them to get located. Sometimes it would take a week to get them located. The covered wagons still provided shelter for them.
The McFarlane family went on to Ogden. Father bought an acre of land on Franklin Street, now named Lincoln Avenue, between 20th and 21st Street, where he and his sons built a small house. He soon found work as he was a first class shoemaker. He also understood the tanning of leather. They took the hides from the animals and prepared them for making the shoes. My parents lived in Ogden until their deaths.
I, James McFarlane, was called by President Brigham Young with many other young men as teamsters to drive oxen and covered wagons, loaded with supplies of food for the Saints coming to Utah. I made four trips over the plains. After the Saints were taken care of, the rest of the wagons were loaded with telegraph wire.
The last trip I made was in 1866. My wagon was loaded with wire. Taking pity on two young ladies, who walked along side of my wagon day after day, I offered to give them a ride, which was graciously accepted. Little did I know one of them would become my wife two years later.
At that time [1867], I found six young people, one of them was me, drawn by two horses and in the spring of the year. We would travel as far as Kaysville, put up for the night, then travel on to Salt Lake; if they got an early start they would make it by dark. The following day they were married after having their endowments. The party consisted of George Odell, bride Florence Grant, James McFarlane, and Martha Smuin. These young people had their endowments and were married 5 October 1867. Gilbert Wright and Annie Odell, the other couple, were married in Ogden sometime before, but had their endowments and sealed the same day as the others. They all returned to Ogden to make their home. My father gave me a piece of property where we built our home, next door to my father and mother, and where we raised to man and womanhood, our eleven children.
I started to work for the Union Pacific Railroad in April, 1870, as Station Baggage Master and retained that same position until called on a mission to England. I labored in the Newcastle Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints under the direction of the president of that conference. I received my call and left home on 6 August 1904.
About two, or three years before my mission, my work was transferred to Salt Lake City. We sold our home in Ogden and moved to Salt Lake City. We lived in Farmers Ward where we bought a new home. My first work after returning from my mission was with the Daynes Beebe Music Store on Main Street in Salt Lake City. Later, I held the position of guide in the state capitol, under Governor Bamburger.

Addendum
James McFarlane left his work at the state capitol, 12 March 1921, went home feeling in his usual good health. Sunday morning, 13 March, he arose at the usual time prepared for going to his high priest's meeting. At that time he was a member of Wells Ward and President of the High Priest's. As he entered the chapel, he found the secretary was absent, so he stepped into the next room, the bishop's office, to get paper so one of the group could then take the minutes of the meeting. A noise was heard, like he had fallen. By the time one of the brethren could reach his side, he had passed away. So he died as he had lived, a faithful Latter-day Saint. Buried in Salt Lake City Cemetery in Plot 40985 N-21-3-E-1.

Description* She was described as five feet, two inches tall, weighing 110 pounds, with dark brown hair, blue eyes, and thin lips.2
Immigration*April 1866  In April 1866 Martha Ann Smuin immigrated to Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah. She left with the Mormon company of Elder John Nicholson on a sailing ship from Liverpool, as her parents waived from the dock. After six weeks at sea the ship arrived in the United States and the company made its way to Florence, Nebraska where they were met by teamsters in covered wagons. Only the very old and the very young rode in the wagons, the majority of the company walked their way to Zion. Their shoes became worn long before they reached Utah, so they wrapped their feet in any kind of heavy cloth they could find. About the first of October, 1866, the wagon train arrived at the outskirts of Salt Lake, and were due to parade into the city the next day. Martha and two girl friends, ashamed of their dilapidated shoes, rose before daybreak the next morning, walked into Salt Lake, purchased shoes, and hurried back to the caravan to walk properly attired into the city.2
Anecdote*1866 On Martha's trip across the plains, while her shoes were worn and thin, there was a young teamster, James McFarlane, who noticed her plight and gave her a ride on his load of freight. He was one of the young men called by the church to go back to Florence, Nebraska, to bring freight to Utah. This gave him the opportunity to cross the plains eleven times. This meeting of James and Martha led to many more, out of which grew a happy marriage.2

Belva captured the attention and empowered the spirits of all who came under her influence. An admired church leader, teacher, mother, foster mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, she lovingly left her mark on all of us, leaving each and every one of us with sweet everlasting memories to help fill the void we find in our lives without her.3
Death*2 September 2008 Bianca Lynn Perry died on 2 September 2008 at Olympia, Thurston County, Washington, at age 50.4
oObit*5 September 2008  On 5 September 2008 Bianca Lynn Krall, age 50, died in Olympia, Washington on Sept. 2, 2008 after a short battle with a cancerous brain tumor. Bianca was born in Seattle, Washington on July 28, 1958 to Robert Leslie Perry and Belva Louise Perry. She was the second of four children. Bianca's early years were spent in Seattle before moving to Everett with her parents and two brothers and one sister in 1968. She graduated from Cascade High School in 1975, at the age of sixteen. Bianca met her husband, Kevin, when she was a waitress at VIP's Restaurant in Everett. Kevin made many trips back to the restaurant and made sure he sat in her section. The first time he asked her out on a date, she said "no". He worked as a logger at the time and rode a motorcycle. She said he scared her. Quiet, non-assuming Kevin persisted until she finally said yes. They married on November 26, 1982. Last year they celebrated 25 years of marriage by renewing their vows at the Salt Lake City Temple in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Bianca loved working at East Olympia Elementary in the Tumwater school district for the last 15 years. One of her favorite memories was from the Olympia earthquake in 2001. She recalled how after the shaking ended, she rushed into the closest classroom and found the classroom empty. Just as she began to panic, she realized there were little feet sticking out from under the desks. She was so relieved, and proud, how every one of "her" students reacted.
Bianca loved to travel, and went on six cruises and numerous road trips, traveling everywhere, from Alaska to Jamaica, crisscrossing the country as she went. One of her wildest trips was a weeklong adventure, flying by bush plane, to assist the optometrist she worked for in Alaska. They ventured to distant villages, where she entertained the children, as the doctor examined the eyes of their parents.
Bianca was a devoted mother, wife, and friend. Every one was welcome in her home. Over the years, she welcomed students from Japan, Columbia, Taiwan and Mexico. Each became a new member of the family. Her cinnamon rolls were legendary. Bianca always uplifted people's spirits by taking time to listen. When she put her mind to accomplish a goal, no challenge was too difficult. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and loved caring for those around her. Every lesson she taught and dinner she planned, was given her fullest consideration. She loved to plan.
Bianca is survived by her husband, Kevin, her two children, Dustin and Carly, sister, Benita Saatvedt (Jon), brothers, Byron Perry, and Bret Perry (Vickie), and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her father, Robert Perry and mother, Belva Perry.
Services will be Saturday, Sept 6, 2008 at 1:00 pm, at the LDS Church, Hendersen Bldg. 3800 Henderson Blvd. SE in Olympia Washington.5

Shelly found him in the bathtub when she went to take in his morning coffee. I was not at home. But it is my understanding that Wayne preformed CPR long after he realized it was too late. Shelly's phone was out of order and it was necessary to run to the neighbors, take the sleeping children out of the house and await the coroner. A horrendous memory I am sure.3,4,2
