Interment in the Vernal Memorial Park and services were under the direction of Vernal Mortuary. Bishop Rex Smuin dedicated the grave. Pallbearers were Russell and Terry Billings; Roger Gardner, Stephen Paulson, Ray Hall and Vernon Colthorp. Honorary pallbearers were Bill Johnson, Kenneth, Keith, Doyle, Denile, and Rex Smuin. The Naples 1st Ward Relief Society was in charge of the floral tributes and lunch.
Nellie Ray Slaugh Neilsen, 78, died at the Uintah County Hospital August 17, 1979 of a heart attack. She was born April 11, 1901 in Vernal a daughter of George A. Slaugh and Rachel Goodrich Slaugh; married George Gilbert Smuin, October 1, 1919; he died 1940; married Bertrum Hammond, was widowed; married Lester P. Neilsen, November 20, 1963, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She was a homemaker; member of the Naples 1st Ward, active in Relief Society and ward organist; member of DUP Porter Merrill Camp and enjoyed raising flowers and vegetables.4

He raised a large family, most have preceded him in death., including children, Kenneth, Keith, Doyle, Dale, and Sheila.
He is survived by his wife, Alta; daughters Joy Quarnberg and Veda Mortensen, both of Salt Lake City; sons, Harold Eugene of Kaysville, Russell Eugene of Cedar City; stepson, Arven Swasey of Wells, Nev; 51 grandchildren; 126 great grandchildren; 34 great great grandchildren; three sisters Sara Johnson, Katie Johnson and Edna Nelson, all of Vernal.6

Funeral services for John Hugh Karren, 71, Naples farmer and stockman were conducted today (Thursday) at 11 a.m. in the Naples Ward Chapel under the direction of the Naples Bishopric.
Mr. Karren died at his residence in Naples Sunday at 11 p.m. of causes incident to age. He was born March 4, 1881 at Lehi, Utah, a son of John D. and Alice Cox Karren. He came to Ashley Valley at the age of two.
He was married to Mary Ellen Smuin Karren Dec. 25, 1908 in Vernal.
Surviving Mr. Karren are his wife; three sons, John H. and Earl C. Karren, both of Vernal; Karl D. Karren, Bonanza; one daughter, Mrs. Harold Kendall, Bonanza; four grandchildren; two brothers, Merrell and Andy Karren, both of Vernal and six sisters, Myrtle Woodrull, Nora Watkins, Hanna Winward and Nellie Gardiner, all of Vernal; Bertha Wilcox, Price and Emma Hardy, Lapoint.
Burial was in the Vernal Memorial Park Cemetery.11

He was a member of the LDS Church and a High Priest in the Canyon View 2nd Ward. He and his wife hosted the building missionaries in their home in 1964. They also jointly taught the Guide Patrol.
Russ will be remembered for his love of the outdoors. He enjoyed numerous fishing trips with his friends to the Yukon and Northwestern Territory. He also hunted and is listed in the Boone and Crockett record book for having a trophy moose.
He supported Weber State Athletics as a member of the Wildcat Club for thirty years and enjoyed attending their basketball and football games.
He spent many hours watching the deer, pheasants and quail in his back yard and feeding a variety of birds that nested in his many pine trees.
He began working at Wangsgard's Market in Five Points at the age of sixteen and retired at the age of seventy-two. He was co-owner of Wangsgard's for twenty-five years.
He is survived by one son, Richard R. (Linda) Smuin, Ogden; and two daughters, Sidnie Garn, Orem, and Jill (Mario) Ortegon, North Ogden; twelve grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother Donn Smuin, a sister Fae Allen, and a son-in-law Ralph F. Garn.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 16 at 11:00 a.m. at Myers Mortuary in Ogden, 845 Washington Blvd. with Bishop Forrest Staffanson officiating. Friends may call Friday from 6-8 p.m. at Myers Mortuary on Saturday from 9:45 - 10:45 a.m. Interment, Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch.4

Boyd graduated from Ogden High School and Weber College with a degree in engineering. He participated in ROTC in both high school and college.
After graduation, he worked in Boise, Idaho where he met the love of his life, Jessie Smart, at a bowling alley where he often scored perfect games.
He began his active military duty in August 1941, as part of the 41st Infantry Division in Fort Lewis, Wash.
He served in the Pacific Theater during WWII. His first combat was Huggins Perimeter, Sanananda, Killerton Point, Gona. The Second Phase included Aitape, Toem, Wakde, Biak. He participated in battles at Papua, Dutch New Guinea, and south Philippines. He attended the 22nd class of the Command and General Staff School, Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. Continuing in the Pacific Theater, he went to Zamboanga, Subic Bay (to plan the Olympic Operation for the invasion of Japan), Kure and Hiroshima.
He returned to the States in December 1945 as one of 143 officers remaining of the 1400 that left Fort Lewis in February 1942. He was discharged March 22, 1946 at Fort Douglas in Salt Lake City, Utah. He retired from the U.S. Army Reserve in 1974 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
His awards and decorations include: Bronze Star, Air Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, Combat Infantry Badge, American Defense Service Medal, Asiatic-Campaign Medal with three Bronze Stars, one Bronze Arrowhead, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star, WWII Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal and seven Overseas Service Bars.
In 1945, after returning to the States, he was reemployed as a salesman at the Pendleton Branch of Crane Company. In 1947, he was promoted to manager and opened a branch in Medford.
In 1959, the Medford branch became Budge-McHugh Supply Company, an independently-owned Crane wholesale distributor of plumbing, heating, valves and fittings. Boyd retired in 1982, passing the family-owned business to his son Louis Budge.
Boyd was involved in many Medford organizations. He was a member of Kiwanis International, a past president of Medford Kiwanis Club, a life member of the Elks Club, Boy Scouts of America Council Advisor, past director of Medford YMCA, past director of United Crusade, president of Rogue Valley Knife and Fork Club, past president of Southern Oregon Reserve Officers Association. He was also a past member of Medford Planning Commission and Medford Architectural Review Commission. He served as Bishop of Medford Second Ward, Medford Stake, LDS Church.
Boyd's interests were hunting, fishing and RV'ing around the West as a snowbird. He and his wife, Jessie, loved their summers at Howard Prairie.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jessie, to whom he was married for 63 years.
He is survived by his children, Barbara Budge Griffin (Scott McKay), Medford; Donna McLanahan (George), Honolulu; Louis Budge (Kathy), Eagle Point; from a previous marriage, Gerald Gillie, Provo, Utah. grandchildren, Michelle Griffin, Sebastopol, Calif; Michael Griffin, Medford, Wendy Griffin, Medford, John McLanahan, Honolulu, Carrie McLanahan, Honolulu, William Budge, Seattle, David Budge, Seattle and Trina Doyle, Oakdale, Calif; great-grandchildren, Casey Griffin, Seattle, Samantha Griffin, Medford, Kelly McLanahan and Haven McLanahan, Honolulu, Chloe Budge and Ethan Budge, Seattle and Justin Doyle, Oakdale.
The family wishes to thank granddaughter, Wendy Griffin and caregiver, Tammy Crance for helping Boyd in his last years.

He received a B.S. degree in commerce from the University of North Carolina in 1935, majoring in marketing and advertising. He was employed by W.T. Grant Company for 39 years. He worked in 17 stores throughout the United States, managed nine stores, and was district manager over Illinois, Kansas and Missouri. He retired in May of 1974.
He was active in civic affairs and was a member and president of the Newport News, Virginia Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of Kiwanis International and served in many capacities, including president in Cleveland, OH and Granite City, IL Lieutenant Governor Ohio District and Illinois-Eastern Iowa District, and chairman of the 1954 Kiwanis International Convention in Cleveland, OH. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America and served as the council president in the Cahokia Mounds Council. He was the recipient of the Silver Beaver Award in Scouting. He also served as the president of the Granite City IL Red Cross Chapter.
He was a member of the LDS Church, serving in many positions including, bishop, stake president and branch president. He served as a service missionary with the LDS Employment Service in both Provo and Mesa, Arizona.
Survived by his wife in Mesa, five sons, Gerald R. Gillie, Salt Lake; Dennis Lee Gillie, Spanish Fork; Dean Thomson, Escalante; Dayl Thomson, Phoenix, AZ and Tracy Thomson, Provo, UT and two daughters Pamela Lee Carson, Bad Vilbel, Germany and Ann Marie Lobell, New York, NY. He was also survived by 30 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, three brothers Charlie Gillie, Thomas Gillie and Allen Gillie and one sister Helen Gillie Johnson, all of Eden, NC.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday in the Edgemont Stake Center, 4300 North Canyon Road, Provo, UT. Walker Mortuary in Provo served the family.
Burial was in the Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park in Salt Lake City.2
