He was born August 17, 1918, in the family home in Bennett's Canyon in Huntsville, Utah, to Richard Smuin and Laura Georgina Wangsgard. He was married to Evelyn Ada Rampton on June 26, 1939, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She died December 20, 1990.
He was a member of the LDS Church and a High Priest in the Canyon View 2nd Ward. He and his wife hosted the building missionaries in their home in 1964. They also jointly taught the Guide Patrol.
Russ will be remembered for his love of the outdoors. He enjoyed numerous fishing trips with his friends to the Yukon and Northwestern Territory. He also hunted and is listed in the Boone and Crockett record book for having a trophy moose.
He supported Weber State Athletics as a member of the Wildcat Club for thirty years and enjoyed attending their basketball and football games.
He spent many hours watching the deer, pheasants and quail in his back yard and feeding a variety of birds that nested in his many pine trees.
He began working at Wangsgard's Market in Five Points at the age of sixteen and retired at the age of seventy-two. He was co-owner of Wangsgard's for twenty-five years.
He is survived by one son, Richard R. (Linda) Smuin, Ogden; and two daughters, Sidnie Garn, Orem, and Jill (Mario) Ortegon, North Ogden; twelve grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother Donn Smuin, a sister Fae Allen, and a son-in-law Ralph F. Garn.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 16 at 11:00 a.m. at Myers Mortuary in Ogden, 845 Washington Blvd. with Bishop Forrest Staffanson officiating. Friends may call Friday from 6-8 p.m. at Myers Mortuary on Saturday from 9:45 - 10:45 a.m. Interment, Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch.13 
Burial* He and Evelyn Ada Rampton were buried at Lindquists Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch, South Ogden, Weber County, Utah. Inscription "Smuin Russel J; Aug. 17, 1918; Dec.13, 2000; Evelyn Ada Rampton; Jul. 22, 1917; Dec.20, 1990."14

oObit*14 April 2004  On 14 April 2004 at Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah. Donna Smuin Fletcher, age 88, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Easter morning, April 11, 2004, leaving evidence of newly planted blue and white pansies in her garden.
Donna was born in Ogden, Utah on December 3, 1915, the third of four daughters to Ralph Dewey and Ray Parkinson Smuin. She spent her childhood years in Ogden on 4th Street. She attended college at BYU where she met and married Charles Thomas Fletcher. They were married on September 18, 1940 in the Salt Lake Temple. They had one daughter Judith Rae. Donna supported her husband while he worked for the F.B.I. and moved all across America. She served in many auxiliary organizations on stake and ward levels for the LDS church. The church was an important part of their lives. They served in the England-London Mission from December 1985-May of 1986. Upon their return, they served as temple workers in the Provo Temple.
BYU was always an important part of their lives. Charles taught for 15 years and Donna worked with Continuing Education. They were great fans of the BYU athletics. They had 5 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren that were the light of their lives.
Donna was the "hostess with the mostess." They had many friends and they loved to entertain in their home with Donna's gourmet meals and Charles' sense of humor.
Donna is survived by her daughter, Judith Rae (Richard E.) Staples; grandchildren: Brook R. (Amy Spencer); Christian F. (Meghan Esch); Matthew F; Ryan F. (Karen Dannelly); Natalie A; two great- grandchildren: Christian M. and Jane H; one sister, Janice Fingerle and her many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles.
Funeral services for Donna will be held on Thursday, April 15, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the Oak Hills 9th Ward, 1960 North 1500 East, Provo, Utah, where friends may call Thursday morning from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. prior to the services. Interment: Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park. Funeral Directors: The Holbrook Mortuary.3 
Burial* She and Charles Thomas Fletcher were buried at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, Millcreek, Salt Lake County, Utah. Inscription "Fletcher; Donna Smuin; Dec. 3, 1915; Apr. 11, 2004; Married Sept. 18, 1940; Charles Thomas; Jan. 9, 1917; Aug. 11, 2003."12

oObit7 August 1962  On 7 August 1962 at Birmingham, England. Mr. Edgar Alfred Smewiii. who was the first Socialist Mayor of Oxford, has died at his home at Oxford. He was 68. Mr. Smewin spent nearly 50 years as railwayman, retiring in 1958 as platform inspector. Elected to the city council in 1934, he became Sheriff in 1943, Mayor in 1944. and was an alderman from 1948 to 1957.
He had been a magistrate since 1932. He had been connected with Oxford Trustee Savings Bank since its foundation and was one of the original members of the Board of Governors of the United Oxford Hospital. An active trade unionist, he served on the executive council of Oxford Trades Council and on the Executive Committee of Oxford City Labour Party.9 
Burial*9 August 1962 He was buried on 9 August 1962 at Oxford Crematorium, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England.8
