Anecdote May, 2nd child, 1st daughter
In a little log house, with little 2 yr. old Jimmy just toddling around, May was born in early summer, a dear little baby girl. She was christened Mary Jane after her 2 grandmothers but was called May.
As a young girl, she went to work in the Z. C. M. I. or Equitable Co-op. She was still a young lady when the family moved to Salt Lake. There she studied nursing thru the Relief Soc. under Dr. Maggie Roberts. In that period of time maternity patients stayed at home and hired a nurse, which was pretty hard for the nurse, as she kept the house clean, looked after the other children, as well as the new baby and the patient. Oh yes, she did all the laundry too. This life swallowed her up completely so that she had no time to make plans for her own life.
After 10 or 12 years she gave it all up (some of it was spent with the Young family) as mother had to have someone to care for her constantly. Toward the end of mother's life I had a very long severe illness and this dear sister took me on as well. Of course the others helped a lot, but May took the responsibility, seemed to m, she got along without sleep for she was going it night and day. There seemed to be no let up for after mother's death in 1913, Mattie was very ill and she didn't get better. Her death was in the winter of 1916.
That was when the Millecams were starting in business in Holladay. There she met David Branson Brinton and he talked her into marrying him. He was the father of a large family. His wife had died and he was out of a home. She won the respect and love of them and they showed their love to her in innumerable ways, trips to their homes as far away as Arizona went to the temple there, visits rides, choice foods, farm produce and lovely gifts. Her life was especially enriched by her new family. At one time when she was in Butte, visiting her sister, we attended an LDS conference. There a young missionary met her and greeted her most affectionately. Later in speaking from the stand he said he was very happy to be present as he had found his grandmother in the audience. She next was kept home to nurse David thru a 1ong illness and to be with him at the end.
Even as busy as she was, she put in lots of time in Church work, taught Sunday School in Farmer's (McKinley) Ward, also in Waterloo; in Holladay took part in Relief Society and had charge of Temple clothes and also was principal of Religion class. Her outstanding work is Temple work. Out of her meagre earnings she paid several to help her get the family records in shape, got hundreds of endowments, doing a lot of them herself. She made over 200 temple aprons.
After David's death she went to live with Seymour B. Young's family. Their daughter Irene, was a life long invalid (67 years) and Florence Pearl was deaf from infancy.
May was so good to her own sister, Florence, who was left alone with two little ones Kenneth and Lucile. She shared everything she had with them.2

Anecdote* His sister, Hattie, wrote, "Joseph was very much admired by his brothers and sisters, parents and legions of fellow workers and friends. He had wonderful control of himself; so I believe that nobody ever heard him display anger or unkindness. He chose always the finer things of life. He was immaculate in person, clean in thot and language; reliable, dependable, generous. He was tender and loving as a son, brother, a husband and father. When he was still a youngster he went to work as cash boy in the Ogden branch cf the ZCMI as a clerk in men's wear. Many a pair of shoes or a garment did he buy for fatherless children and others. He stayed with ZCMI untill he went on his mission to England where he came in contact with David O, Mc Kay. There he labored largely in Liverpool. He left in 1898. He made some fine, friends who emigrated - the H. J. Haltons, McKays and others. He married Pearl Richards, a granddaughter of Franklin D. Richards, a very sweet young .lady, lovely in face and figure, also in character. She taught school and was refined and cultured. They became parents to four daughters, The first one, Mary, they lost in infancy The others are Margaret and Lou Ceil and Eleanor. Now Joseph had had to change jobs when he got home from his mission in England, as ZCMI had closed its doors, in Ogden. Joseph then worked for Boyle Furniture, becoming managing director. He stayed with them the rest of his life. He kept close to the Church, working up to Counselor in the Mt. Ogden Stake, to Robert I. Burton. He in his work and Pearl in the Literary Work in Relief Society. In his 58th year and Pearl in her 54th, they ware suddenly removed by a tragic death . They had said good-bye to their three daughters and little Nancy, as they left for a Rotary Club banquet in Salt Lake. Returning near midnight they were hit by the Interurban Train (Bamburger) Both were instantly killed at Woods Cress . John and Arthur were the first of the family at the scene. Their funeral was held in Ogden Tabernacle and was filled to overflowing. John printed a beautiful book containing the whole services.18

Anecdote His sister, Hattie, wrote:
"Arthur was born November 12, 1883, Lincoln Ave in Ogden City. Several in the family were musically inclined and Arthur loved it, also. He sang a lot and spent about 45 yrs leading choirs. He was a very young man when he was called by Bishop Woodruff of Waterloo Ward. He had no musical training but he got much help from Evan Stephens who lived not far away. It was Arthur's nature to do everything the best he could So he soon had a good choir. His sister Louise helped him learn all the parts to a song before he began teaching it to the choir. He loved this work and was very successful. Once his choir furnished the music for a Sunday Oct conference (year 1911) He also presented them in several operettas which were successful financially as well as otherwise and the Whittier Ward Chapel was helped on its way.
He also enjoyed singing in the Tabernacle choir with Evan Stephens director, Prof John J. McLellan organist and later with Spencer Cornwall director. He went with the choir in 1909 to Seattle and in 1911 to New York.
His career as a politician was splendid. He managed successful campaigns for Gov. Blood, Herbert Maw and Neslen for Mayor of Salt Lake City. He became Dem. Chairman of the county. Never asked anything for himself but helped some worthy friends – his own father as a guide at the State Capitol, his wife's father a bailiff in the court and many, many others. And of course it was during these same years that he was aiming at financial security. He was in the coal business for many years changing as the company changed; usually at the same desk. First it was Burton Coal, next Standard Fuel, Western Fuel and the Parrot Coal (this was an unprofitable venture some where along the way). Mr Sweet was Mgr at Western. When he died and his sons took over, it didn't take long for the business to die too. He then organized the McFarlane Fuel Co. with Raymond, Merle and Blaine
Up to this time, he had been very successful. He serviced the U. of U., many Salt Lake Ward chapels and business houses and apartment houses, etc.
It was during these same years that his family came along. He married Gertrude Rock, daughter of Jacob and Louise Free Rock, Jan 16, 1907. Gertrude continued teaching her school out near Kaysville, riding the train on which her father was the engineer. Little Gertrude Merle was born Nov 10, 1907. She was a lovely, good natured baby. Each one in turn brot a big share of joy. Lenore Marie came Nov 11, 1909 – a cute little one for sure.
Three years later on Dec 26, 1912, Raymond was born at home. So there were toys everywhere that day and Christmas still brand new. Next came twins the boy was named Melvin and the girl Melva. Born May 27, 1916. Blaine was born March 16, 1922. Little Melva died 24th June, 1919.
Arthur had a nervous break down when his business failed."18
Burial* He and Gertrude Tan Rock were buried at Salt Lake City Cemetery, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah.1,19

Anecdote* Her sister, Hattie, wrote "Mattie had great strength of character. No task was ever too hard, she never considered being tired. She was always on the side of the one who needed a champion. She was eager to do things and worked well everywhere around the home. Did a big part in raising a garden, could even milk the a cow. She had a real knack with a needle; she trimmed bats nicely, made beautiful dresses and even coats and particularly loved to make baby clothes and things for small children. Often when she worked at P. K. Thomas' store she spent her lunch money and lunch hour to make a little dress or nightie for the little niece or nephew living next door. How I did admire this sister of mine - so clever, so capable, so determined to see the rest of us get ahead, that she worked long hours to accomplish this, often making our clothes after she had put in long hours at the R. K. Thomas' store alteration department - week days 10 hours - Saturday's 15. Many a time I would meet her on her pay day, we would go down market row about 11 p .m. and get all the fixings of our Sunday dinner and treat for the kids , like dates, or kippered salmon or honey comb or taffy. Mattie loved to make us happy, had a love for laughter and fun. I remember three dresses she made for me which were special. The first was for me to wear to Joe's wedding in 1905. Florence had one too. We all went to this grand affair in Ogden. Some of us went with father, driving the horse with our surrey with "the fringe on top." Joseph married Pearl Richards. So there were many Richards, Wests ,Herricks. I was young and much impressed with the Negro waiters who served lunch to us. Another of these special dresses was my graduation dress, or dresses. One of them was for 8th grade exercises for Salt Lake County which were held in the old Salt Lake Theatre (1901). Four years later there was the one she made me for my University of Utah graduation, also held in the Salt Lake Theatre (1905). It was a beautiful white . We felt very sorry for a girl who couldn't have a white dress for graduation. Then in 1910 she made my wedding dress. My! but it was beautiful, rows of trimming, lots of sewing. It had a five pointed overskirt and reverses over the shoulders and these were all edged with three rows of lace. She also sewed for the whole family. Next came our children. Every little niece had her best dress, every little nephew a suit probably made from his Daddy's old one , from the hands of their Aunt Mattie. She made a lovely coat from a black caracul and a bonnet lined and trimmed with pink bows and pink satin. My, but that was the elegant one.! Mattie loved music so her Church work revolved a lot around choir singing and duets and special numbers. In those days, musical contests were quite the order of the day among our church choirs Our brother, Arthur, was the leader in Waterloo Ward. Our first try was rated a failure (because of stage fright) and the judge said we were guilty of the unpardonable sin of discord. How those words burned into our ears. The organist, Ivy Allen was only 15 and she cried and cried. A year later it was next to impossible to get them to again participate, but Bishop Asahel Woodruff and other ward leaders coaxed and plead til we again entered, this time attaining top place and lovely words of praise . Next were entered piano solos and quartets, trios, etc. Ivy placed high and our ladles quartet was top winner."9

Anecdote 3rd child - Martha Ann, commonly called Mattie
I believe I am right in saying that Mattie was the first of the family born in the big house. Her birthdate was Sept. 29, 1872.
She had great strength of character. No task was ever too hard, she never considered being tired. She was always on the side of the one who needed a champion. She was eager to do things and worked well everywhere around the home; did a big part in raising a garden, could even milk the cow. She had a real knack with a needle; she trimmed hats nicely, made beautiful dresses and even coats and particularly loved to make baby clothes and things for small children. Often when she worked at R. K. Thomas' store she spent her lunch money and lunch hour to make a little dress or nightie for the little niece or nephew living next door.
How I did admire this sister of mine, so clever, so capable, so determined to see the rest of us get ahead that she worked long hours to accomplish this, often working at making our clothes after she had put in long hours at R. K. Thomas' store alteration dep't – week days 10 hours, Saturday's 15. Many a time I would meet her cause, it being her pay day, we would go down market row about 11 p.m. and get all the fixings of our Sunday dinner and treat for the kids , like dates, or kippered salmon or honey comb or taffy. Mattie loved to make us happy, had a love for laughter and fun.
I remember three special dresses she made for me. The first was for me to wear to Joe's wedding in 1905 Florence had one too. We all went to this grand affair in Ogden. Some of us went with father driving the horse with our surrey "with the fringe on top." Joseph married Pearl Richards. So there were many Richard's, West's Herricks. I was young and much impressed with the negro waiters who served lunch to us.
Another of these special dresses was my graduation dress or dresses. One of them was for 8th grade exercises for Salt Lake County which were held in the old Salt Lake Theatre 1901.
Four years later there was the one she made me for my University of Utah graduation also held in the Salt Lake Theatre (1905). It was a beautiful white . We felt very sorry for a girl who couldn't have a white dress for graduation.
Then in 1910 she made my wedding dress. My! but it was beautiful! rows of trimming – lots of sewing. It had a five pointed overskirt and reverses over the shoulders and these wire all edged with three rows of lace on all.
She also sewed for the whole family. Next came our children. Every little niece had her best dress, every little nephew a suit probably made from his Daddy's old one from the hands of their Aunt Mattie. She made a lovely coat from a black caracul and a bonnet lined and trimmed with pink bows & pink satin. My! but that was the elegant one!
Mattie loved music so her Church work revolved a lot around choir singing and duets and special numbers. In those days, musical contests were quite the order of the day among our church choirs Our brother, Arthur, was the leader in Waterloo Ward. Our first try was marked by failure because of stage fright and the judge said we were guilty of the unpardonable sin of discord. How those words burned into our ears. The organist, Ivy Allen was only 15 and she cried & cried. A year later it was next to impossible to get them to again participate, but Bishop Asahel Woodruff and other ward leaders coaxed and plead til we again entered, this time attaining top place and lovely words of praise! Next were entered piano solos and quartets, trios, etc. Ivy placed high and our ladles quartet was top winner. This was composed of Lucile Bennion, her sister, Mattie McFarlane, and Beulah Woodruff. Mattie also taught Sunday School and Mutual. and was well liked
Her life was not a long one only 44 years. She received her endowments during the dedication of the Salt Lake Temple in 1895, when a very young woman. She, like May, had assumed the work of mother's family and were kept so busy that they missed getting any of it for themselves. Mother had very poor health, not much in comforts and plenty of worries. It was a matter of grave concern to Mattie particularly; to find all of a sudden that it was too late for her.
Whether it was or not is the question I only know that there never were two women with better qualities or more self sacrifice than these two sisters Did the rest of us contribute as much to their happiness as they did to ours?

Anecdote* James McFarlane Jr. Aug 1, 1868 - July 30/Aug 1, 1950
Born Aug. 1 1868 in Ogden Utah at 2138 Lincoln Ave in the log house on Grandfather Peter McFarlane's acreage. He was a good child, ever helpful to family and kind, very devoted to things he felt he should do.
As a boy, he bot a goat and delivered papers. Later he went to work at Blogett Groc. Store.
He married Tirzah Shaw in 1888 or 9 He built a two room brick house away at the rear of his main home at Canyon road and Washington Ave. Two boys first little house Clarence Earl, and Horace James. Then they built a lovely – roomy and modern home about 1897 and there were born Rita Diana and Carl 1898 and 1903. Soon he began to work for Scowcroft Wholesale Groc. Stayed with this firm for about 30 years. When Earl as about 16, and doing real well with his music lessons he took sick with rheumatic
fever and died Sept. 29, 1909 in California where they had taken him for his health. He next worked (Ogden Wholesale Grocery Co, Fred J. Kissel Co. and) for Globe Mills 20 years. The next important event for them was the wedding of Horace to Inez Saunders in the Salt Lake Temple. They have raised three children, the first one Helen was born in Ogden Also James at a lovely little home on the father's lot facing Canyon road. While working for Union (Southern 1) Pacific he was transferred to Oakland, Cal.
Then came Rita's wedding to Harry Miller, a non member. They are parents of two – Ralph born 1919 and killed in World War II. And Donna.
A few years later, the parents moved to Salt Lake to have Carl attend the University of Utah. In 1909 James bot a Studebaker and he and his family visited us often. I think it was about 1935 when Tirzah had a stroke and was sick many years. Rita and Harry moved back to his former home in Cincinnati, Ohio. Carl went with his sister after completing schooling and he is now a college professor there. These two urged their parents to come and live with them which they finally did after 75 years in Ogden about 1943
Tirzah had gotten so bad that James put her in a private convalescent home where he paid generously to have her cared for and also spent 8 hrs. daily caring for her.
James visited in Salt Lake & Ogden every other year and there spent every day in Temple Square, writing letters and following the guides, listening to the pioneer story and listening to the organ recitals and being in the place he loved so well.
Tirzah died Dec 21, 1948 Buried in Ogden
James was with us on his 80th birthday and we had a picnic in Liberty Park. He died July 30, 1956 and was buried on his 88th birthday Aug 1, 1956.
I forgot to tell how I, a small child cried after James & Tirzah's wedding because I missed hearing the brass band which came to serenade them but I was sound asleep and missed it.22

Anecdote* His sister, Hattie, wrote, "John also was truly a good man - if being good means being kind, thoughtful generous, devoted to his father, mother and family, to his first wife Alice and four children, and his second wife Gladys and their five children; and to the work he chose to do and to Church work that he was called to do. His vocation was printing. He was particularly accurate in this work. He was called on to print many record books for Church organizations. For years he made the records for the Relief Society. He made the programs for their conferences. Thousands of missionary farewells, Primary booklets, wedding invitations, etc. Sister Spafford issued a membership card to him. He began printing as a young man in Ogden with Glassrnan of the Ogden Standard. He was a young man of 20 when the family - with the exception of James and Joseph - moved to Salt Lake. There he got work with the Deseret News. After a number of years there, during which he received part of his pay in script. he and a partner went into business for themselves on Richards Street across from Temple Square, South Gate. They called it Seagull Press. John finally became sole owner of the Seagull Press. In March of 1899 he married Alice Liddle. Their children were - Glen who died in infancy, Harold, John, Victor Clark and May. He built a beautiful little house on Alice's property at 335 Wilson Avenue (?) About 1915 he built a large lovely home at 1329 Browning Avenue. There they enjoyed life together in Wasatch Ward until Alice's death in 1926. In the fall of 1927 he married Gladys Openshaw, who worked in his office at this time. Gladys was 25 while John was 50. In spite of the difference in their ages they were very happy. Gladys gave him five children, Betty, Marily, Craig and the twins -Gary and Glenda. The two girls graduated from the University of Utah and both boys filled missions. John's business was prosperous, he had both sons and his son-in-law Harold Meadows working with him. Then he suffered a stroke, from which he never fully recovered, so the last .4 or 5 years were very hard for him. Gladys felt that she must work, as the business needed her help. There were quite a few of their families depending on this shop. It was pretty hard for Gladys then, as she had a little cherry orchard in Kaysvile and she had to see that the fruit was cared for and marketed. She also took care of her 80 year old mother part time, sharing with her sister Leone O.Jacobs. GI.adys married again, this time to Hyrum Hilton."23

Her disposition - excellent, tender, sweet, full o£ fun amiable arid always gave justice to everyone. When there were difficulties or clashes of temperaments she could make you see your enemy in a different light. She was a real peace maker. She has had a happy married life with Gilbert Mears since 1906. He has been kind and thoughtful. They are the parents of five children: Martha Clifford, Ruth, Lynn and Wallace. Ruth died in infancy. True members of the Church of Jesus Christ of L.D.S. they have both served well; Gilbert emigrated for its sake from England, Louise's love of little children placed her in the Primary work. Thereafter she taught in Farmer's and Waterloo Wards. She also gave many years of service in the Whittier Ward Primary as well as Waterloo. At a General Primary Conference in the 40's she, among others, was called to the stand in the Tabernacle to receive a corsage for thirty years service to the L.D.S. Primary.
