After serving at Fort Mead, Md., and in Japan, Carl and Karen returned to Montana where Carl worked various jobs until accomplishing a life-long dream of becoming a pilot.
Carl worked as a flight instructor in Dillon and then at Butte Aero in Butte, before becoming a pilot for the Montana Power Co., in 1980 from which he retired in 1999.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in various callings in the Butte First Ward.
Carl is survived by his wife of 54 years, Karen; brothers, Bill Hartwig of Red Rock, Kenneth (Suzie) Hartwig of Belgrade; sister-in-law, Chari (Gordon) Payne of Whitehall; children, Janis (Dan) Woodards of Butte, Pat (Annie) Hartwig of East Helena, Kym (Walt) Lewis of Ammon, Idaho, Faith (John) Metesh of Butte, Kyle (Megan) Hartwig of Vancouver, Wash., Jake (Lisa) Hartwig of Butte, Alden (Carol) Hartwig of Selah, Wash., Laura (Kevin) Terry of Washougal, Wash., Jon (Chris) Hartwig of Raymond, Ohio, and Jennifer (Tyler) Fleming of Butte. Carl had 21 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Karen was born March 21, 1939 in Dillon, MT to Jake Neidt and Beulah (Maybee) Istre. She was raised by her father in Wisdom, MT and went to school and worked in Hamilton and Dillon, MT until she was married to her husband of 54 years Carl Hartwig on September 9, 1956 at Bethesda, MD while he was serving in the Navy and they were later sealed for time and all eternity Decmeber 13, 1969 in the Idaho Falls Temple in Idaho Falls, ID.
After stays in Maryland and Japan, they returned to Montana to raise their family. After living in Glen, Whitehall and Dillon they finally moved to Butte in 1975, Karen worked at Isabella's Dress Shop and briefly for Mountain Bell before going to work at Montana Power Company as an operator and dispatcher. She retired from Montana Power in 2001. Karen was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served faithfully in various callings with adults, teenagers and children for many years.
Karen was preceded in death by her husband Carl Hartwig, parents Jake (Norma) Neidt and Bea (Tom) Istre and her father-in-law Julius Hartwig and mother-in-law whom she loved Isabella Hartwig. She is survived by her sister of Whitefish, MT, brothers-in-law of Whitehall, MT and Redrock, MT; Children of Butte, MT; East Helena, MT; Ammond, ID; Butte, MT; Vancouver, WA; Yakima, WA; Prescott, WA; Washougal, WA; Central Point, OR; and Butte, MT; Karen has 27 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren Karen is proceeded in death by 2 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
A graveside and interment will be held Monday January 21 at the Mountain View Cemetery in Dillon, MT at 10 a.m. followed by a reception held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at 3000 Four Mile Road, Butte, MT at 2 p.m. Contributions can be made in Karen's name to the general missionary fund of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.7 
Burial* She and Carl Julius Hartwig were buried at Mountain View Cemetery, Dillon, Beaverhead County, Montana. Inscription "Hartwig; Husband Father Papa; Carl J., Aug. 10, 1935; Oct. 24, 2010; Wife Mother Nana; Karen O; Mar.21, 1939; Jan 14, 2019."8

He was dying in one of Otis Crooker's cabins, with a systolic blood pressure of forty when I returned from Helena that night. I remember frantically hand cranking my grandfather's old centrifuge to seperate blood cells to cross-match and transfuse. We got him as far as the rickety old elevator in Bozeman Deaconess Hospital where he died on the way to the operating room."3,4
