(author) oObit | Grace Helen Smuin wrote the obituary of Franklin Smuin; Franklin Smuin, was born in Ogden, Utah, September 11, 1893. He had been an accountant, graduating from Ricks Academy in Rexburg, Idaho. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the California Mission and was honorably released on September 10, 1917. Joseph E. Robinson was then President of the California Mission. On June 27, 1918, he enlisted in the United States Army as a Private of the 27th Casual Cantonment, Vancouver, Bks, Washington. He was honorably discharged from the service on October 12, 1918 by reason of disability. While he served in the Army in World War I he became deathly ill with influenza and pneumonia and nearly died. It affected his heart and his health the rest of his life. He received Disabled Veteran benefits for the rest of his life. He married Ruby Grace Lundquist on September 11, 1924 in the Salt Lake Temple. Soon after they were married, Franklin became very ill with inflammatory rheumatism and was in the hospital for some time. They moved to Glendale, California, and after a year or so they decided to go back to Salt Lake by train. Ruby was pregnant with their first child, and they found a home on Westminister Ave. and Aunt Elsie lived with them. Glen was born, a beautiful little blond baby, but at age 1 ½ had the misfortune to get a mastoid ear infection. He was operated on and could not pull through. He died on December 12, 1928. Soon after, they moved to California again. Grace Helen was born on January 14, 1930. Perhaps Franklin was still saddened by the death of his first born son and his daughter, Grace Helen, filled some of the emptiness in his life. Another daughter, Marilyn Joan, was born on August 3, 1935. Franklin was a kind and gentle man and loved his family. His daughter, Grace Helen, felt a warmth with him and they were close. Franklin spent many hours at the library, reading and studying and was very knowledgeable about scientific matters and politics. Franklin and Uncle "Doc" Pugmire had many heated discussions of political. Franklin studied the scriptures and was a student of the Gospel. He wrote a treatise (or manuscript) called The Divine Plan of Creation. He worked on this for many years but never saw it reviewed for publication, He became inactive in the Church when I was very young. His daughter never knew why. He was devoted to his wife and loved her deeply. He called her "My Jewel." When she was ill with cancer and became progressively worse, it was devastating to him and he became disturbed and eventually needed psychiatric care. For awhile he was at Norwalk State Hospital in California. He was released just days before Mom's death on February 19, 1959. This was traumatic for him and he died of a heart attack six weeks after her death. He was living with us in Reedley, California. Dr. Marden Habegger, our family physician, signed the Certificate of Death—"death caused by acute myocardial infarction—instant, due to coronary sclerosis and myocardial Heart disease." Also listed, "Diabetes 1 year, and Hypertension, 5 years. He died at age 65. No autopsy was performed. He was such a good man. Franklin and Ruby are buried in Forest Lawn memorial Park, Glendale, Los Angeles County, California, Biography written by daughter Grace Helen Smuin Laemmlen.9 | |
Death* | 31 October 1998 | Grace Helen Smuin died on 31 October 1998 at Orem, Utah County, Utah, at age 68.3 |
oObit | November 1998 | In November 1998 Grace Helen Smuin Laemmien, age 68, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and daughter, left us unexpectedly on one of her favorite holidays--Halloween--October 31, 1998. We will remember her as peacemaker, teacher, artist, mother, disciple of Christ. Grace was born January 14, 1930, in Glendale, California, the second child of Franklin and Ruby Grace Lundquist Smuin. She married Arthur R. Laemmlen June 26, 1954 in Pasadena, California. The marriage was later solemnized in the Los Angeles LDS Temple after Art's conversion to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After 33 years of marriage, Art and Grace were divorced, but continued in united devotion to the welfare of their three children. After graduating from high school in Alhambra, California, Grace attended Pasadena City College, the University of California at Davis, and graduated from UCLA with a degree in Elementary Education. She loved learning and was eager to share that love with the littlest students. She taught school for 14 years in California's central valley. Grace's gift for teaching spilled over into her abilities as a mother and grandmother. She deeply loved her children and their children and always found time to spend with them--reading, playing, laughing, teaching. They cherished the personal care she offered so freely. She loved nothing more than a good celebration, and pulled out all the stops for holidays and other family events. Her only sadness was that her declining health prevented her from doing more of the things she loved to do. In addition to her family, Grace's loves were classical music, the arts, gardening, bird-watching, and star-gazing. She was a quiet artist who came to life with the stroke of a brush or slide of a pen. And she was never too old to learn something new--she always had an interesting story about the constellations or what was happening today in the news. Grace had an insatiable appetite for knowledge. A life-long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Grace served in numerous callings and studied the scriptures regularly. She possessed an unheralded spiritual depth that allowed her to see past the bumps of life and concentrate on the things that matter most. We will miss her unconditional love and simple devotion. Grace is survived by her three children, Paul (Leslie) Laemmlen of Cedar Hills, Utah; Ann (John) Lewis of Orem, Utah; and Eric (Dody) Laemmlen of Reedley, California; her 10 grandchildren and her only sister, Marilyn (Laurn) Beutler of Atascadero, California.10 |
Burial* | 4 November 1998 | She was buried on 4 November 1998 at Orem City Cemetery, Orem, Utah County, Utah.11 |
